The Faces of Luminex: Christine Valle, Global Marketing

Here at Luminex, each system we develop has a dedicated team managing every detail of the instruments, reagents, specifications, and more. For our xMAP® Technology, that team is led by Christine Valle, Director of Global Systems & Consumables Marketing. The proud Texas native came to Luminex in 2011 and holds a bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University.

Q: What are your responsibilities at Luminex?

A: I’m responsible for cradle-to-grave global product management of our xMAP Technology portfolio, which includes the systems and consumables. My day-to-day activities involve providing marketing leadership for our development projects, building relationships with our partners and customers, and handling product-related issues and requests — things like bead configuration change requests or new product ideas.

This role is a shift from your last position here in marketing communications. What inspired the change?

A: Before joining Luminex, I spent almost 15 years in product management at different companies. I’ve always gravitated toward products scientists use in research. At Luminex, I moved into a marketing communications role, which was a great way to learn a different aspect of marketing, such as how to develop creative communication strategies to tell the Luminex story. But I missed product management. In that area, you own the health of your product line; it’s like being a small business owner within a large company. You get to work directly with your customers and support teams to develop products that customers need and care about to help them drive research forward.

Q: What drew you to Luminex?

A: I had been aware of Luminex since about 1999. My past work involved PCR and oligo products, so I saw the level of technology that Luminex drove in the market. With multiplexing technology, Luminex enabled customers to do more with less sample, and I found it really interesting. I knew they had an excellent product and that scientists liked to work with. It’s exciting to see the different ways customers use xMAP Technology.

Q: If you weren’t working in marketing at Luminex, where would you be?

A: Originally, when I went to college, I was thinking of going into either med tech or veterinary medicine. I’ve always enjoyed the lab work and I’m a huge animal lover. I have three dogs – two beagles and a Lab mix – so I’d probably be on a career path that let me help people or animals through whatever health issues they might have.

Q: If you could solve any clinical or genetic challenge, what would it be?

A: I would choose PCOS, or polycystic ovary syndrome. I was diagnosed with it in my late 20s or early 30s. It’s something that women don’t talk much about, and sometimes there’s even a bit of shame around it. It can impact fertility and lead to long-term complications such as diabetes and heart disease. There’s currently no cure for it, just management of symptoms.

Q: What is something about you that no one at Luminex knows?

A: At work, I’m very structured and organized, so people might be surprised by my creative side. In school, I played the flute and liked theater arts. In my off time, I still enjoy painting and even singing a bit of karaoke.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do in Austin on the weekend?

A: My favorite thing here happens once a year, and it’s the MotoGP race. It’s a Grand Prix motorcycle race held at the Circuit of the Americas. It’s the only American MotoGP race, so it’s exciting to have that kind of access to it. I love to geek out on the physics of it, watching these riders go incredibly fast and manage difficult angle leans around the track. It’s something that my brother and husband love to watch as well, so it’s a great time to enjoy family!
