The Faces of Luminex: Jill Mathias, Customer Relationship Management

At a company the size of Luminex, even routine business processes can become very complex. We rely on Jill Mathias, CRM/Salesforce Program Manager, to keep things running smoothly when it comes to some of our key sales tools. A member of our team since 2008, she earned her bachelor’s degree in communications at St. Edward’s University.

Q: What are your responsibilities at Luminex?

A: I manage the pricing team, which maintains pricing in both Oracle and Salesforce, and the data management team, which maintains data integrity for the accounts, locations, and contacts in Salesforce. I work closely with the diagnostic sales teams to understand where their pain points are, then follow up with sales support, business analysts, IT, and other groups to ensure the Salesforce application continues to meet their needs. I also conduct quarterly CRM Steering Committee meetings with the executive management team to discuss and prioritize all of the Salesforce projects for Luminex.

Q: For people who have never used it, what is Salesforce?

A: It’s a customer relationship management tool. At Luminex, we mostly use it for tracking leads, opportunities, quoting, and agreements for our customers. It’s most highly utilized by the marketing and sales teams for quoting and agreements, and we also use it heavily for tech support and field services via cases and work orders.

Q: What did you do before this?

A: Before joining Luminex, I was an account manager at a builder home site company.

Q: What drew you to Luminex?

A: I actually knew folks who worked here, so it happened through networking. I started in the order management department. Coming from a builder’s company into the biotech industry felt like stumbling into a whole new world filled with super-smart people who were doing some amazing, life-changing things.

Q: If you could solve any clinical or genetic challenge, what would it be?

A: Definitely a cure for cancer, because of the numerous stories that have been so near and dear in my life recently.

Q: If you weren’t at Luminex, where would you be?

A: Growing up, my dream job was to be a national news reporter. That’s what I went to college for. I interned at multiple radio stations and television stations here in Austin, but life took me in another direction.

Q: What is something about you that no one at Luminex knows?

A: In my senior year of high school, I won a radio contest with a prize of two pink mopeds. I turned around and sold them for my first car, a 1979 Toyota Supra.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do in Austin on the weekend?

A: After spending as much time as I can with my kids and grandkids, I love to go visit the local breweries. They are awesome! I usually like the whites or IPAs, but I don’t discriminate much.
