During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, find time to get involved

Get Screened for Breast Cancer

If you haven’t had breast cancer yourself, chances are you know someone who has. One out of every eight women will develop breast cancer during her life, and while it’s less common for men, even they can develop this disease. In the United States alone, more than 240,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and more than 40,000 will die from it.

Breast Cancer Awareness

This October, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we encourage you to take the time to learn a few new details about this quiet killer. While there’s been a lot of attention paid to hereditary breast cancer — the Angelina Jolie effect is still going strong — that accounts for just a small percentage of people who develop breast cancer. It’s important to know the symptoms and risk factors of this disease because it can strike anyone. For example, women who are 50 or older develop breast cancer at higher rates than younger women. While finding a lump may be the most widely recognized sign of breast cancer, other symptoms include things that are easier to ignore, such as flaky skin or pain. (Check out this quick guide for more info.)

Helping Those Impacted

In addition to brushing up on signs and symptoms — and making sure your loved ones do the same — there are plenty of other ways to support and honor those affected by breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Foundation welcomes stories of people whose lives were upended by this disease; it’s a lovely way to honor someone you know. You can also find a local race or walk to help raise money for research and other needs.

Luminex Toronto Races for a Cure

The Luminex team in Toronto recently joined in the Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure, resulting in a donation of more than $1,700 to the Canadian Cancer Society from Luminex employees. More than 82,000 Canadians from different communities participated in this event, raising an estimated $16.2 million for the breast cancer cause. Congratulations to the Luminex Community Involvement group in Toronto, which helped organize our participation!

Ways to Support

This month, make sure you find a way to support those affected by breast cancer, as well as research scientists who are determined to find a cure. You are champions!
