ARIES® MRSA Assay

The ARIES® MRSA Assay is an easy to use, in vitro diagnostic test for the direct detection of methicillin–resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) DNA in nasal swabs from patients at risk for nasal colonization, in under two hours.

ARIES® MRSA Assay Overview

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a Gram-positive bacteria that is resistant to several antibiotics. The CDC estimates that approximately 1 in 50 people in the U.S. are colonized with MRSA in their nose.1 Further, individuals who are colonized are four times more susceptible to infection.2 MRSA is commonly found in hospitals and healthcare facilities, where it can cause severe health problems, including pneumonia, bloodstream infections, sepsis, and even death.1

The ARIES® MRSA Assay aids in the prevention and control of MRSA infections in healthcare settings. To increase the confidence in a MRSA call, the ARIES® MRSA Assay includes mecA/mecC resistance gene detection, and SCCmec and orfX targets to ensure the resistance gene is associated with and present in S. aureus.

The ARIES® MRSA Assay Offers:

  • Clinically Relevant Targets: Incorporation of mecA/mecC, SCCmec, and orfX for a single MRSA call
  • A Streamlined Workflow: On-board sample processing and automated analysis make running the assay quick and easy
  • Rapid Turnaround Time: Results are available in less than two hours
  • Flexibility and Efficiency: Run up to 12 ARIES® assays simultaneously, including ARIES® MRSA, C. difficile, and Group B Strep
  • Built-in Patient Safety: Internal barcode scanning matches samples to cassettes, decreasing the risk of sample input errors

Workflow

The operator transfers a portion of the sample from the ESwab™ container to the Sample Processing Tube, vortexes, and transfers the sample to the cassette. The cassette is placed into an ARIES® Magazine, loaded to the ARIES® System, and the run is initiated.

Intended Use

The ARIES® MRSA Assay is an integrated, real-time, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based qualitative in vitro diagnostic test for the direct detection of methicillin–resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) DNA from nasal swabs in patients at risk for nasal colonization.

The ARIES® MRSA Assay is intended to aid in the prevention and control of MRSA infections in healthcare settings.

The assay is not intended to guide, diagnose, or monitor treatment for MRSA infections. It is not intended to provide results of susceptibility to oxacillin/methicillin. A negative result does not preclude MRSA nasal colonization.

Concomitant cultures are necessary to recover organisms for epidemiological typing or for further susceptibility testing.

The ARIES® MRSA Assay is indicated for use with ARIES® Systems.

ARIES® Systems are class 1(I) laser products.

Validation of LIS compatibility must be performed by the end user.
