VERIGENE® RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTION TESTS

VERIGENE® Respiratory Tract Infection Tests

Respiratory tract infections pose a significant diagnostic challenge because of the breadth of known pathogens and the non-specific nature of symptoms

Respiratory Tract Infections

Infections caused by influenza A and B viruses (the flu) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are associated with seasonal outbreaks and are collectively responsible for a majority of respiratory illnesses.

Other respiratory pathogens such as adenoviruses, human metapneumovirus, parainfluenza, and Bordetella pertussis are also associated with significant morbidity and mortality.1-6

As is the case with other infectious diseases, respiratory infections often require a positive identification of the causative agent in order to direct optimal patient treatment. Underscoring the need for rapid and accurate testing, the most commonly prescribed antiviral medications are most effective when administered within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms.7

Influenza

Flu is highly contagious and affects up to 20% of the population each year. It is responsible for more than 200,000 hospitalizations, and as many as 49,000 deaths each year, depending on the severity of the season.8 Influenza can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections, and a general worsening of chronic conditions.9

Respiratory Pathogens

Respiratory pathogens are responsible for more than one billion annual cases of the common cold and other related illnesses.10 They are recognized as a serious contributor to respiratory ailments in children, the elderly, and the immunocompromised and commonly mistreated with unnecessary antibiotics due to delays in diagnosis.11

The VERIGENE Difference

The VERIGENE® Respiratory Pathogens Flex (RP Flex) provides viral identification information clinicians need to select appropriate treatment for their patients. VERIGENE RP Flex can limit misuse and overuse of antibiotics, which are ineffective and not indicated for viral infections, and provide results within two hours. As a result, the VERIGENE System provides better patient care, reduced morbidity and mortality, improved surveillance, and a minimized spread of nosocomial infections.

RESPIRATORY PATHOGENS FLEX (RP FLEX) TEST

The VERIGENE® Respiratory Pathogens Flex (RP Flex) is an automated, multiplexed, flexible nucleic acid test for the identification of the viruses and bacteria that most commonly cause respiratory infections.
