Alzheimer’s disease is the most common age-related neurodegenerative disease, affecting as many as 5 million Americans and 24 million people world wide. It is a progressive and invariably fatal disorder, progressing from relatively insignificant loss of memory (termed Mild Cognitive Impairment) to dementia, in which affected individuals suffer profound loss of memory along with severely disrupted reasoning. It is the seventh-leading cause of death in the United States.
